Muutama vuosi sitten puhuttiin Linuxin syrjäyttävän Microsoftin eteenkin uuden polven tietokoneista (miniläppärit, ARM, älypuhelimet, tabletit jne...). Mutta alkoikin näyttää siltä, ettei Microsoft Windowsia niin vain syrjäytetä siitä asemasta mihin se pääsi 1990-luvulla. Kunnes...

Kunnes Google astui kuvioihin ja alkoi toden teolla tunkea markkinoille. Microsoftia ei syrjäytetä vallankahvasta pelkästään tuomalla "hyvä käyttöjärjestelmä" kilpailijaksi. Tarvitaan kovan luokan yhtiö jolla on kuluttajien hyväksyntä. Google tunnetaan. Googlen käyttöjärjestelmä ei herätä "epäilyksiä" ja Google voi olla se tekijä, jonka vuoksi Microsoftin alamäki todella reaalisoituu. Unohtamatta tietenkään Applen brändiä. Jobsin mukaan Apple on jo ottanut 20% pc-kotimarkkinoista haltuunsa Microsoftilta.

Steve Jobs reported that Apple had taken 20% of the home market for personal computers. That 20% of the market is lost to Microsoft for additional sales (games, etc.). Mac owners are highly unlikely to buy Microsoft products like the XBox-360, Zune, or a phone running Windows Phone 7.

Porting Windows to ARM is going to be a nightmare for Microsoft. They are already three to four years behind Apple and Google in operating system development, since it appears that the Windows Phone 7 code base is going become an orphan.

Tuli joulun aikana testattua yhtä Androidin HTC-mallia ja vierailtua samalla muutamalla sivustolla. Kun sitten jälkeenpäin kävin noilla sivustoilla katsomassa näkyikö tuo vempain vierailijoiden joukossa huomasin että eipä näyttänyt käyneen. Onko samoja havaintoja muilla? Tuli vain tuosta mieleen että Android-puhelinten huikea lisääntyminen ei siis välttämättä näy nettisivustoja mittaavissa eri laskureissa eikä sitten näissä ns. "market-share" tilastoissa.

Dellistä taitaakin sitten tulla ensimmäinen laitevalmistaja joka alkaa toimittamaan dualboot-miniläppäreitä Windows 7/Ubuntu:lla valmiiksi asennettuna. Saa nähdä pitääkö uutinen paikkaansa ja onko Dell itseasiassa todellakin uranuurtaja tällä saralla?

Canonical on October 7 announced its latest Ubuntu 10.10 operating system and Ubuntu Light for netbooks, and noted that consumers should be able to see Ubuntu Light-featured netbooks appearing in the channel within a month. Taiwan notebook makers expect Dell to be the first brand vendor to launch related netbooks, as among all notebook vendors, Dell currently has the biggest number of PC products that are pre-installed with Ubuntu. However, Canonical declined to comment on the speculation.

Ubuntu Light only requires a boot-up time of seven seconds, and features several basic functions such as Internet browsing and e-mail processing. Meanwhile, the operating system (OS) shares the same file format as Windows 7 to allow easier data access between the two systems.

As for the prices of products featuring Ubuntu Light, Canonical only pointed out that they will be decided by brand vendors. But notebook makers believe the prices are unlikely to see significant differences compared to those of Windows 7-only machines and should be attractive to consumers.

Dual-OS to become a standard for Acer dual-core netbooks

Acer, at its new netbook launch press conference, noted that the company plans to adopt dual-operating systems (Windows 7 and Android) as one of the standard specifications for its future dual-core netbooks, according to sources from Acer.

Since adopting Google's operating system does not cost much, but will provide more efficiency to its consumers, the strategy is expected to stimulate demand.

Acer has announced its new dual-core Aspire One netbooks in Taiwan with four color choices of blue, green, red and purple, targeting the young and fashionable consumer group. The netbooks will feature Intel's Atom 550 processor as well as Android.

Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin, at the conference, citied figures from Gartner and pointed out that netbooks will not be replaced by tablet PCs, and global netbook shipments for 2010 will reach 36 million units, and will grow even higher to 50 million in 2014.

As for Acer, the company is aiming to ship 40 million notebooks in 2010 with 10 million being netbooks. Acer is confident of achieving the goal and will continue its lead in the netbook market, Lin noted.

No nyt sitten miniläppärin käyttäjät pääsevät testaamaan Android-käyttöjärjestelmän ja Windows 7 toimivuutta ja tehdä siitä johtopäätökset. Mikä tulee olemaan mielestänne ostajien yleisin johtopäätös? Siirtyykö nettikäyttö Android-Linuxiin?

ABI Researchin tarkistettujen tietojen mukaan vuonna 2009 osuus n. 24%. Tänä vuonna markkinaosuus tulee putoamaan. V. 2009 myytiin n. 36 miljoonaa miniläppäriä. Niistä vajaat 9 miljoonaa Linuxilla.

Mistä saisi selville mitkä kernelit antavat tuen esim. seuraaville Nvidian näytönohjaimille:

GeForce 8000 series or higher; Geforce G100, GT120, 130, 220, GTS 150, GTS 250, GT310, 320, 330, 340, GeForce GTX 260 and higher, any ION based products.

Kuuluvat esim. Geforce G120 ja G100 mihinkä "sarjaan" ja löytyykö niille tuki esim. kerneleistä 31,32 ja 33?
