Viime aikoina esille nostetut väitteet, että ohjelmistotalot menettäisivät vuodessa jopa yli 50 000 000 000 dollaria tuloja piratismin takia on asetettu kyseenlaiseksi. Väitettä on mahdotonta ensinnäkin todistaa ja se perustuu vain niiden yhtiöiden laskelmiin joiden toteutunut myynti ei ole vastannut markkinaodotuksia. Lisäksi on myös enemmän kuin kyseenalaista lisääkö poliisitoiminta "tottelemattomien" paluuta lisenssisoftan piiriin.
Alla olevassa blogissa arvellaan että tuorein piratisminvastainen ryhtiliike saattaa todennäköisemmin vain siirtää miljoonia ihmisiä avoimen lähdekoodin ohjelmistojen käyttäjäksi.
