https://ubuntu.com/proCanonical has announced the general availability of Ubuntu Pro, its subscription-based service that offers ten years of extended security updates for Ubuntu’s ‘main’ package set, plus an extra 23,000 packages available in in the ‘universe’ repo.
Ubuntu Pro launched in beta back in October but, as of January 26, it enters ‘general availability’. It is available for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS, 18.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS, and 22.04 LTS.
Canonical say tens of thousands of Ubuntu users signed up for the service while it was in beta, and that it is already in production “for large-scale customers offering global services”.
As part of Ubuntu Pro, Canonical manage critical, high, and selected medium CVEs for “thousands of applications and toolchains” including Ansible, Apache Tomcat, Docker, Nagios, Node.js, phpMyAdmin, Puppet, Python, Redis, Rust, WordPress, and more — all while remaining compliant with regimes like FedRAMP, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS.
Ubuntu Pro also includes Livepatch. Livepatch allows critical and high-severity kernel vulnerabilities to be patched “live”, without the need to reboot.
Ubuntu Pro is free for personal use on up to 5 PCs. Ubuntu members can use it for free on up to 50 PCs. For business, a standard Ubuntu Pro subscription costs $25/year for workstation or $500/year for server. A 30-day free trial is available.
