tvtime in Finland
« : 08.11.06 - klo:20.38 »
Hi,

I want to use tvtime and I am not able to scan the frequencies with PAL standard. Could you please suggest what TV standard should I use to be able to retrieve them? Is there anything else that I need to configure in order to make it work?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi!

PAL is the one to use here in Finland.

I haven't used tvtime but I assume it requires a working tv capture card and I also assume you have it. But is your card properly configured? What's the type of the card - do you know if it works with Ubuntu?

Hi,

Thanks for the anwer! Your assumptions are correct  :)

I use a Hauppauge WinTV USB card. According to the forums, it should be working in Ubuntu. I installed usbvision, but my guess is that the card is not yet working properly. There is the same error as described here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=109329&highlight=wintv+usb

/home/lucian/usbvision/src/usbvision.c: USBVision[1]: registered USBVision VBI device /dev/vbi2 [v4l] (Not Working Yet!)

I would appreciate any other suggestions!

It's been discussed here too: (in finnish, sorry..)
http://forum.ubuntu-fi.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=b99faccfac19eaaf940a50ee3cc4492c&topic=4797.new

Kernels greater than 2.6.16 are supposed to support it - what's your kernel version / are you using Ubuntu Edgy or Dapper?
The last message (from two days ago) is 'I wonder if i just should sell the card. It just doesn't work and I don't have time or possibilities to spend tens of hours with the card..'

But 'hpne' wrote that he was able to make the card work in Ubuntu Dapper, following the instructions at http://www.linuxtv.org/v4lwiki/index.php/How_to_build_from_mercurial
He says you need to install v4l-dvb (he's not been able to install remote control..)

And in Edgy it should 'just work' (=supported card in Edgy, no special config required or if, then the same v4l-dvb)

The message at Ubuntuforums you linked - the user has written the message almost a year ago.. But a week ago he's been writing stuff here (about tvtime!): http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=286955

Send him a private message in ubuntuforums and ask if he was able to make wintv work..

Let us know if you can get it work!

Hi Risto!

Thanks for your answer!

Kernels greater than 2.6.16 are supposed to support it - what's your kernel version / are you using Ubuntu Edgy or Dapper?

I am using Ubuntu Edgy and my kernel version is 2.6.17-10-386.

But 'hpne' wrote that he was able to make the card work in Ubuntu Dapper, following the instructions at http://www.linuxtv.org/v4lwiki/index.php/How_to_build_from_mercurial

I was following these instructions and run into bigger problems. When inserting the modules into the kernel (with 'make load'), Ubuntu just stopped responding to any keyboard or mouse action. After rebooting (with reset button), the display wouldn't show anything at all (not even the boot screen at PC start-up). It only started working again after resetting the CMOS.

Anyway, after coming back to Ubuntu, I have a different messages in dmesg:

[17180354.684000] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
[17180355.160000] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 4 choices
[17180355.264000] usbvision: disagrees about version of symbol video_devdata
[17180355.264000] usbvision: Unknown symbol video_devdata
[17180355.264000] usbvision: disagrees about version of symbol video_unregister_device
[17180355.264000] usbvision: Unknown symbol video_unregister_device
[17180355.264000] usbvision: disagrees about version of symbol video_device_alloc
[17180355.264000] usbvision: Unknown symbol video_device_alloc
[17180355.264000] usbvision: disagrees about version of symbol video_register_device
[17180355.264000] usbvision: Unknown symbol video_register_device
[17180355.264000] usbvision: disagrees about version of symbol video_device_release
[17180355.264000] usbvision: Unknown symbol video_device_release

So, I guess in this situation it would be better to go back to the situation prior to building v4l-dvb. How can this be done?

Or is there any other way of going further?

Hmm.. I've never myself compiled a kernel or played with the modules so I have no idea.. I suppose there is a way to remove installed kernel modules - and I'd think you should be able to install the official 'clean' kernel too.. But I hope someone else can help you here.. Or ubuntuforums.org maybe..
