Resoja Hardylle /vanha ATI

Isäukon koneeseen laitoin Hardyn vanhan Gutsyn tilalle lähes puhtaana asennuksena, eli käyttäjän piilotiedostot siirtyivät.

Ongelmaksi on muodostunut näytön reso: Feistyllä ja Gutsyllä oli 1024x768 ilman suurempia rutinoita, mutta Hardy ei tunnu millään suostuvan moiseen ja tarjoaa vain 800x600.
Jos displayconfig-gtk:lla säätää reson 1024x768, niin narisee bootissa systeemin kyvyttömuudestä toistaa sitä ja pudotta sen tuohon 800x600:aan.

Olen koittanut tuota Hardyn xorg.conf:iakin ronkkia ja poistanut sieltä kaikki mielettömät resot , jotka se oli pätkäissyt sinne ilmeisesti hyvän monitorin takia virtuaalisina.

Mitenkähän tuota vielä pitäsi ruuvata, että käyttökokemus olisi entisenlainen eli tarpeeksi tarkkuutta. Näyttömuistin määrää en nyt tarkalleen muista, mutta tuo 1024x768 16-bittisillä väreillä oli maksimi, mikä toimi Feistyllä ja Gutsyllä.

No kiitos linkistä, mutta osaamiseni on vähän syvempää laatua, joskin töppäykset ovat aina mahdollisia 
 Nuo on jo kokeiltu aikoja sitten. Ja tuo isäukon näytönohjain on tosiaan siinä museaalisen rajamailla. Sinun siihen verrattuna upouusi. Oma paraskin näytönohjaimeni on vain ATI 8564, millä tulen jo hyvin toimeen.
Asia on periaatteellinen, kun se kerran toimi edellisilläkin Ubuntun versioilla, olisi kohtuullista, että se toimisi nykyisellä.
Oma veikkaukseni ongelman syystä liittyy joko FrameBufferiin tai virkistystaajuuteen. Vielä on vähän vaiheessa tuo Hardyn Xorg:iin ja xorg:in parametreihin perehtyminen, mutta ehkä sieltä löytyy apu noilla johtolangoilla, ellei joku asioista enemmän tietävä ehdi neuvomaan ensin

Minä olen myös huomannut ATI:n näytönohjaimien kanssa esiintyvän ongelmia resoluution kanssa.
Tämä ei edes koske pelkästään Linuxia. XP tekee saman, jos ei ole tarjolla ATI:n omia ajureita.

Uudessa pöytäkoneessani on ATI Radeon HD2600 Pro ja näyttönä Samsung 2232BW 22" (1650x1050).
Tässäkin Ubuntun oma vapaa ajuri antaa tarkimmaksi resoksi 1280x800. Vasta ATI:n suljetuilla ajureilla pääsee tarkkuuteen 1650x1050.

Toisessa koneessani (kannettava Dell) on ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 ja suurin näytön tarkkuus 1920x1200.
Ubuntun vapailla ajureilla tästä tulee 1600x1200 -näyttö leveillä mustilla reunoilla. Atin suljetuilla ajureilla sitten pääsee 1920x1200 tarkkuuteen.

Voin käyttää molemmissa uusinta HD-ajuria v. 8.8. Vanhoilla näytönohjaimilla on varmaan ongelmana löytää sopiva ATI:n ajuri.
